Did the above watercolor here and there over the past week (click image for full version). It's a character from the book who's new, and not in the webcomic version.

I got a job working retail part time, and having a blast. It really makes me value my time more, plus meeting all the customers and co-workers has been a great exercise in character study. I've also been really obsessed with the democratic nomination race, which has been just fascinating.

My dearest Kazu gave me an awesome 4' tall Orion Skyquest xt8 telescope for my birthday. Boy, does he know me, or what?! I've been looking through it on almost every clear night. It's been a big source of inspiration for me these days. I just love looking at the stars and daydreaming about them! Of the objects I've managed to locate (Saturn, Venus, the Pleiades...) the Orion Nebula is without a doubt my favorite. You can actually make out the features of the nebula, which just takes my breath away. Seeing the rings and moons of Saturn is also pretty inspiring, and a crowd-pleaser (when strangers walk by asking what I'm doing, I like letting them look through and share the wonder!). And of course, seeing the moons craters is always a trip. I can't wait to use the telescope in a really dark sky though, because the skies of Alhambra have a lot of light pollution.

Also, for those interested, I updated my flickr page with some photos of Kazu's Amulet signing at Nucleus, the Warner Bros. Studio tour with my family, and more.

Speaking of Kazu, he just wrapped up the lineup for Flight 5 last night.  Man... all I can say is that you're all in for a real treat!

Working on chapter 16 of Rema now, and everything's going well.  I love writing, and with each page written, I love it even more. It's really freed my imagination in unexpected ways. Life has been awesome these days. Hope everyone else is doing just as well, if not better!

Man, it's awesome. But I started this hobby with nothing more than a pair of good binoculars. totally affordable, you can get a pair at Target, and it blocks out a lot of light pollution. They're a good way to get to know the sky before investing in something like a big telescope. Look at me and my long reply... hehe >_

great drawing! and congrats on scoring the telescope! i fondly remember looking through my dad's telescope in the philippines [where there is NO light pollution] - my mind was thoroughly blown.

Cool gift! What kind of job are you working, if you don't mind me asking? I'm actually secretly looking forward to working retail again for a little bit. I got paid less but I gained a lot more worthwhile experiences doing that than my "real" art job. :/

I'm working at an independent bookstore, and having a blast! I think a little smidgen of retail can be healthy every once in a while. ;)

Cool present! And I'm curious about your job too--what are you selling? Are you working in Nucleus maybe?!

Yeah Flight 5 will be really good. It feels odd to see it from the perspective of a non-contributor for the first time.

And, nice painting! Is that for Power In Numbers as well?

hehe Independent bookstore! It's been awesome. I get to look at book covers all day and recommend titles to customers. I've been discovering a lot of good books this way, too... Also, it feels to good to support an indy bookstore. Every sale counts!

The piece is just for fun, not for power in numbers. I decided to just draw for myself for a while. I'm trying to retrain my brain to think of drawing as something I do for pure enjoyment again, instead of for a career since I want writing to be my career for a while. I think it's been good for me.

Nice, I've worked in a bookstore before--and also a couple libraries. You should share all your finds! I've been trying to read more too. I joined shelfari.com to share my reading habits with Lark and Jen, but I think I'm going to just start blogging about the books I like.

Yeah, I stopped submitting to Shelfari after it got HIDEOUS. Apparently Good Reads is the one people are joining? I wish something would stick because I like remembering what books I read in the past year.

Oh wow, that character's pose really struck me as familiar. Based on a Japanese Oni god perhaps?

Also, what a lovely gift. I'm looking forward to Flight 5!

Heavy duty inspiration from Hokusai's painting of a thunder god. Good eye! :)

Ah, it's good to see my Japanese Art History has not totally abandoned me post-graduation. XD

You're going Japanese art style. Very nifty. =D

Glad to hear you're alive and well. XD I've been wondering about you! So as I glance at the replies (I'll probably reply again after I've actually read the entry. XD), you work at an independant book store? Sweet! My dream job, working with books all day. =D Ohh, and I was wondering what did you think of the review I did for Amulet, it wasn't horribly offensive was it?

Now, that I've read through the actual post rather than oogle at art and skim. I have telescope envy now. Bad. That takes me bad to the days when I fancied being an astronomomer or an astrophysicist. Also I've read (in the supermartket, yeah, I'm bad like that) an interesting article about the fate of the universe in the most recent Sciam and here's the link: http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=the-end-of-cosmology

Don't know if you'd be interested but I thought I'd share. =)

Glad that you're enjoying writing Rema and that you're loving it. Me, on the other hand...I'm feeling overwhelmed with mine project. But, since this is your post and about you, 'twould be interesting to see the differences between the written story and the webcomic. =) Not that this is a hurry-up mind you, great work, always takes time!

Hmmm, I really want to see the new Flight...even though I've yet to read 3 and 4, I think I've been turning more into a book collector than reader, which I want to remedy.

It's cool to see you posting art again :) Also, Independent bookstores can be fun; you'll definately get some inspiration on characters and new titles to read! I'd rather work in a bookstore than any other retail job when it comes down to it. Awesome telescope, and your family is so cute! :D
